Record Breaker in Final Regular Season Meet

Kearney, Neb. – The Nebraska-Kearney track and field team won seven events and Central City junior Andrew Schuller set a new school-record in the hammer Friday evening at the annual Alex Francis Relays in Hays, Kan.

This was the Lopers final regular season meet of the spring. The MIAA Championships are next weekend in Pittsburg, Kan., followed by several "Last Chance" meets and then the NCAA Championships. Andrew Schuler

Schuller won both the discus (166-9) and hammer (194-2) and in the process set a new Loper standard. His toss in the hammer bested the record of 193-3, set by Giltner redshirt sophomore Alex Goracke just 12 days ago. That throw had broken a record that had stood for 12 years.

UNK went 1-3 through in the hammer with Goracke at 192-3 and Illinois redshirt sophomore Ross Berggren at 186-0. That places him ninth on the all-time list. Behind Schuller in the discus was Holdrege redshirt senior Blake Schroeder (158-1) and Goracke (155-7).

Also taking the gold today was Wallace redshirt freshman Micah Swedberg in the 400 (48.32) and McCool Junction redshirt sophomore Luke Stuckey in the 800 (1:52.28). Finally on the men's side, Axtell redshirt freshman Lane Bertrand was runner up in the 110 hurdles (15.31), Utica redshirt senior Tanner Barth was second in the shot (55-8.25) with the 4x1 relay team third (43.38). That foursome featured three freshmen.

The Loper women were led by Elm Creek sophomore Claire Cornell who went a career-best 19-1.25 in the long jump. That was a winning effort and keeps her fifth on the UNK all-time list. Cornell was then fifth in the 100 meter dash (12.50).

Also coming in first on the day was Kearney senior Anna Squiers in the discus (145-10) and Holdrege redshirt sophomore Cassidy Connell in the shot (43-3.25). Finally, Kearney redshirt sophomore Haley Schall was runner up in the long jump (18-6.50), Kansas freshman Jaida McEwen was runner up in the javelin (131-10),  Grand Island senior Mackenzie Puckett was second in the the triple jump (38-7.50), Abie redshirt sophomore Rebekah Roh second (58.93) in the 400 and Omaha redshirt freshman Hannah Pollan taking the silver in the 800 (2:21.700.
