Season Comes to a Close in MIAA's

Kearney, Neb. – Northwest Missouri State won four straight singles matches to eliminate Nebraska-Kearney, 4-1, from the 2021 MIAA Tournament Friday morning in Edmond, Okla. Claire Neil

The third-seeded Bearcats improve to 11-6 and face second-seeded Washburn on Friday afternoon. A young Lopers squad, seeded sixth, ends the year at 6-13.

Earlier this month at Harmon Park the 'Cats edged the Lopers, 4-3, thanks to several three-set singles wins. Like in that dual, UNK won the doubles point but couldn't keep pace in singles this time around.

Freshman Myrzaiym "Mia" Sherikulova (Kyrgyzstan) and sophomore Brooklyn Hunter (Topeka, Kan.) rolled at number two, 6-2, and finish the spring with an 8-8 record. Senior Claire Neil (Papillion) and freshman Melisa Becerra (Colombia) had to work harder a spot higher, winning 7-6 (3). They rallied from a 3-0 hole and also finish 2021 with eight wins as a pair. Northwest was leading at number three, 6-5, when that match was called.

In singles freshman Victoria Caster (6-0, 6-0) and freshman Vera Alenicheva (6-0, 6-4) won at number six and number one, respectively, to make it 2-1 on the scoreboard. Another straight set win at number five put the 'Cats a point shy with sophomore Julia Aliseda recording the clincher at number two (6-3, 5-7, 6-0). Hunter was in the third set at number four when her match was stopped (3-6, 6-2, 2-1) with Sherikulova also in a battle at number three (6-4, 4-5).

Neil, who received her 2021 MIAA Sportsmanship Award prior to the dual, was UNK's lone senior this season.
