Hello Newman ... Lopers Sweep the Jets to End 2021

Kearney, Neb. – Redshirt sophomore center fielder Bri Healy drove in six runs in game two and senior Melissa Gellermann tossed six strong innings in game one to help Nebraska-Kearney sweep Newman, 7-4 and 13-0 (5 innings), Saturday afternoon in Wichita.

These were the final games of the 2021 season for both teams. The Lopers (17-25, 8-18) won its final three contests and went 7-5 down the stretch. The Jets, meanwhile, dropped its final 13 games to end at 6-31 (4-22).  

Healy (Omaha Central) had herself a day in game two as she went 3 for 4 with two runs and those six RBI's. She smacked a three-run dinger in the fifth and had a three-run double in the fourth. Next, junior first baseman Hailey Schaneman (Grand Junction, Colo.) continued a recent hot streak by having two doubles in game one and a solo homer in the second game. 

In game two UNK tallied two in the first and second innings, three more in the fourth and then sixth in the fifth. A 12-hit attack included three doubles and two dingers with three others outside of Healy having multi-hit games. California junior Hannah Ice earned her second win by blanking the Jets over the first three innings. She fanned two and didn't allow a walk while giving up four hits. Finally, Australian senior Shae Muggridge and Lincoln junior Kelsey Goodban combined for two scoreless innings.

Gellermann (Grand Junction, Colo.) won for the fourth time in 2021 thanks to working around nine hits. She fanned two and walked one while not allowing an earned run. Kansas redshirt junior Megan Blake threw the final inning and didn't give up an earned run.

The Lopers erased a 1-0 hole by scoring two in the top of the second. They added single runs in the third and fifth innings before tallying two in the seventh. Among 13 hits was a 3 for 4 effort from Kearney junior third baseman Avery Wood. She also scored three times.

On the year, junior outfielder Carlee Liesch didn't draw a walk in 142 official at bats with Healy leading the team in RBI's (36), runs (26), total bases (82) and slugging percentage (.582). Finally, Liesch (.366) led the team in batting average for a second time in three years as well as being first in steals (12).
