8/21/2021 5:45:00 PM

Kearney, Neb. – The Nebraska-Kearney volleyball team, with seven practices under its belt, got kills from 12 different players to down the Air Force Academy in five sets (-23, 24-26, -23, 21-25, -9 Saturday afternoon in Colorado.

This was an exhibition for both with the teams deciding prior to first serve the match would last five sets regardless of score. In addition, both subbed liberally over the final two sets. USAFA, picked seventh in the Mountain West Conference preseason poll, becomes the second MWC team to fall to the Lopers in exhibition play. Kearney downed Wyoming, 3-1, two years ago in Cheyenne.

Wyoming transfer and Alliance redshirt sophomore outside Emersen Cyza led in kills (13) and hit .296 with Kansas true freshman outside Asha Regier entering the match in the third set and tallying nine kills. Four others had at least five kills including Hastings redshirt freshman e outside Cecilia Beahm and Kearney senior middle Anna Squiers. Next, Lincoln redshirt freshman right side/libero Lauren Taubenheim (10) led in digs with Kearney redshirt sophomore middle Bailee Sterling leading in stuffs (four).

"I think what we liked we most was we carried on the tradition of being very competitive, scrappy and never giving up. It seemed like we were down in every set but made a run at the end. We played well under duress," UNK head coach Rick Squiers said on the KRVN radio post game show. "We also don't know who is going to play in a handful of positions. We saw some really good things off and on from a lot of players, newcomers and veterans alike."

UNK trailed for the most part in each of the first three sets but found a way to win two of them. The Lopers closed the first on a 9-3 run that featured an ace from North Platte junior right side Sami Mauch and five Falcon attack errors. Sterling had a block assist on two of those miscues. Kearney rallied again the second but a video review overturned a Hayley Daniel (Edmond, Okla.) kill that would've made it 25 all; UNK had been down 20-16. The Falcons followed the review with a kill from junior outside Brookelyn Messenger to tie the match at one.

The third saw UNK erase a 16-12 hole with Beahm having two kills down the stretch and USAFA committing five hitting errors, three of the unforced variety. Finally, the reserves took over in the fifth and hit .316 (8-2-19). A Cyza kill ended the day with North Platte true freshman setter Peyton Neff serving an ace.

"They are going to have a solid year in the Mountain West and they'll be handful in here (Cadet East Gym). They competed like crazy," Squiers said. "We're very thankful for Air Force letting us come out here. It's a no-win situation for them. They've treated us in a first class manor."

Air Force had three more kills, three more digs and nine more team blocks than the Lopers but committed 13 service errors and was aced five times. The Falcons also cooled off as the match wore on, finishing up at .245. Messenger had 10 kills with 6-1 senior Bailey Keith and 6-4 sophomore middle Joi Harvey at 14 apiece. Both hit over .300 with Keith adding nine blocks.

"We controlled the ball but we still have a lot of room to get better. We didn't block a lot of balls, we didn't serve well especially early on in the match," Squiers said. "That's why you play these matches. You might think one thing but now you know more where you're at in certain areas."

UNK heads to New York City for the Molloy College Tourney in two weeks.
