Weekend #1 Preview: UNK in South Dakota to Face the 'Jackets & Dragons

9/1/2021 3:20:00 PM

Kearney, Neb. – The Nebraska-Kearney women's soccer team has one of its furthest non-conference road trips in program history this weekend, traveling 7.5 hours almost due North to Aberdeen, S.D., for two neutral site games.

This is the 13th year of Loper soccer and UNK will battle Minnesota State-Moorhead Thursday (Sept. 2) and Montana State-Billings (Sept. 4) Saturday at Northern State University. Check the soccer schedule page for kickoff times and media links.

UNK beat the MSU-B Yellowjackets, 2-1, early in the 2018 season while tying the Moorhead Dragons, 0-0, in the 2019 opener. In that contest the Lopers had an 11-4 shot advantage and saw a goal disallowed. The Moorhead game came at Cope Stadium with the contest vs. the 'Jackets in Montana.

The Lopers have had a busy fall camp, practicing twice daily and then having three home scrimmages. They scored five goals in those games, two from redshirt sophomore Cammie Davis (Wichita, Kan.) in a win over Concordia (Neb.). She had a goal in a 2019 tie at Northwest Missouri State.

Super seniors Megan Cook (Bellevue West) and Kassidy Kirsch (Rapid City, S.D.) are back after starting all 18 games in 2019. Cook earned 2019 honorable mention All-MIAA honors with Kirsch having started 28 games as Loper. Next, senior Kylee Moore (Omaha Burke) was tabbed 2021 first-team All-MIAA spring as UNK played eight "non-countable" contests. Finally, the newcomers include true freshman Dolcie Hanlon (Grand Junction, Colo.), who had an assist in the scrimmage vs. Hastings College, and redshirt freshman keeper Emery Mounce (Spring Hill, Kan.).

Kearney hosts Northwestern Oklahoma State (Sept. 10) and Augustana (Sept. 12) next weekend at Foster Field.
