Lopers Downs No. 27 Gannon, Finishes Weekend 4-0

Kearney, Neb. – Redshirt sophomore outside Cecilia Beahm had 24 kills, seven off the school-record, to help No. 4 Nebraska-Kearney rally past No. 27 Gannon, Pa. (18-25, -12, 20-25, -14, -14) Saturday night in Rockville Centre, N.Y.

The match was part of the Molloy College Invitational with UNK besting Wilimington University of Delaware (-17, -12, -10) Saturday morning to reach 4-0 o the young season.

UNK downed the WU Wildcats with ease but the Golden Knights (3-1) proved a lot tougher in the evening. The Lopers beat GU, 3-1, in the 2019 National Quaterfinals in Denver. This time around the match featured 21 ties and 10 lead changes with GU having three different players with at least 11 kills and four players dig up at least 11 balls. The Golden Knights hit .317 (16-3-41) to win the first set but cooled off after that. They were also aced seven times.

The Lopers hit .359 (15-1-39) to easily win the fourth but trailed 7-5 in the fifth and were forced to call a timeout. A 7-4 Kearney run followed, capped by a Beahm (Hastings H.S.) solo block, and the Knights never led again. After a GU timeout, they tied things up three more times with a kill by freshman outside Asha Regier (Newton, Kans.) putting the Lopers at set point again. A kill and ace from redshirt sophomore right side Sami Mauch (North Platte) provided the winning margin.

UNK out hit GU by nearly 100 points, .253 to .157, with eight different payers registering a kill. Besides Beahm's production, Kearney senior middle Anna Squiers provided 11 kills, four digs and three blocks. Next, Beham reached in her kill total in almost 50 swings (24-5-39; .388 pct.); middle Jeri Walkowiak had 31 kills in a five-set match vs. Regis in 2010. Finally, Regier totaled 11 kills and four digs with Lincoln senior libero Lindsay Nottlemann scooping up a match-high 34 balls. That total is just six shy of tying the school-record and one off her career-best effort.

Alliance sophomore outside Emersen Cyza and Mauch combined for 21 kills in the win over WU. The math lasted just over an hour with the Lopers out hitting WU by nearly 300 points. Finally, 17 different UNK players took to the court.

UNK hosts the University of St. Mary (Kans.) Wednesday night with the Rosella Meier Classic set for next weekend.
