Late Goal Propels Yellowjackets

Kearney, Neb. – True freshman Maddie Smith went top left in the 66th minute to help Montana State-Billings down Nebraska-Kearney, 1-0, Saturday afternoon in Aberdeen, S.D.

Both teams are now 1-1 with the Yellowjackets, from the Great Northwest Athletic Conference, moving to 1-2-0 all-time vs. UNK.

MSU-B, which held a 17-9 shot advantage, moved the ball up the right sideline in the 67th minute. UNK went to clear an attempted pass but the ball ricocheted back to a 'Jacket who found Smith in the top corner of the right box. She went top shelf in the left corner for her first collegiate goal.

UNK seemingly tied things up with around five minutes to go after redshirt freshman Aspen Brandich (Colorado Springs) scoring on a corner taken by Cammie Davis (Wichita). However, the officials ruled the ball went out of bounds before it came back into play. MSU-B freshman Liberty Palmer had a team-high five shots with junior keeper Tuva Sallvin recording eight saves. The Swede stands 6-3 and began her career at Division I Louisiana Tech.

The Lopers had six shots on goal, two apiece from California senor Perla Navarro and Kansas redshirt sophomore Ariella Mesa. In goal, Kansas redshirt freshman Emery Mounce stopped five shots.

UNK hosts Northwestern Oklahoma State and Augustana next weekend at Cope Stadium.
