Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Twenty-Point Win to Start the Weekend

Kearney, Neb. – The No. 4/9 Nebraska-Kearney women's basketball team started and ended strong to defeat Lincoln, 70-50, Thursday night at the Health & Sports Center.

The Lopers (12-1, 7-0) win an 11th straight game and improve to 11-2 all-time against the Blue Tigers (4-9, 0-7) from Jefferson City, Mo. The two teams will meet again on Feb. 19.

UNK scored 17 of the first 19 points and then tallied 21 points in the fourth quarter. The Blue & Gold garnered 21 points off 21 offensive rebounds, had 12 different players in the scoring column and held LU to 1 of 14 shooting over the first 10 minutes.

"The first quarter they were struggling from the field and then after that, 50% the rest of the way," UNK coach Carrie Eighmey said. "They had some kids that don't typically take some outside shots, make some. ... That's just part of college basketball and we have to be able to adjust and figure out what we need to do to slow them down."

Junior forward Shiloh McCool (Pleasant Hill, Ia.) recorded her team-best six double double of the year, tallying 11 points and grabbing 10 boards in 23 minutes off the bench. Next, junior guard Trinity Law (Brandon, S.D.) had 12 points, five assists and four caroms over 31 minutes with freshman Alayna Benike providing instant offense off the bench. She made 4 of 5 shots (2 of 3 threes) and went 2 of 2 at the line in only 10 minutes. The Castlewood, S.D., native also had four o-boards.

Lincoln, taking advantage of 16 Loper turnovers, whittled a 16-point first half deficit to eight by the five-minute mark of the third quarter. UNK responded with nine straight points from Benike and by going 4 of 8 from behind the arc in the fourth.

"We're seeing lots of different things. The first half it was man, the second half zone," Eighmey said. "In the second half they did a good job of making us make a shot. They were running two or three guys at our post players not letting us get post touches and making us hit outside shots."

Also for UNK, South Dakota wing Klaire Kirsch had a game-high 14 boards and six points with Elkhorn post Brooke Carlson supplying 11 points in just 15 minutes of work.

"Alayna had a couple really good offensive rebounds ... in a zone, no one's really assigned to box anybody out so that's what we told them in a timeout is go get some O-boards and she did a good job," Eighmey said.

Eight different Blue Tigers scored with reserve Niyah Jackson at a team-high 11 in 17 minutes off the bench.

The Lopers host defending Central Region champion Central Missouri Saturday at 2 p.m. The Jennies (9-6, 5-3) fell tonight at nationally-ranked Fort Hays State, 84-59.
