#22 Tigers Score Late to Nip the Lopers

Kearney, Neb. – Junior Hannah Mares scored in the 71st minute to lift 22nd-ranked Fort Hays State to a 1-0 win over Nebraska Kearney Sunday afternoon in Kansas.

This was the regular season finale for both teams. The Tigers (10-1-7, 5-1-5) bounce back from a loss at Washburn on Friday and now prep for the MIAA Tournament. The Lopers end the fall at 0-15-3 (0-9-2).

The FHSU Soccer Stadium is always a windy place and that was the case again today as there was gusts up to 40 miles per hour. Each team took advantage of the conditions, UNK having six of the seven shots in the first half and the Tigers having all 11 shots after the break. They also managed 16 second half corners.

The Lopers fought off a corner three minutes into the action and then got shots on goal from Kansas senior Lily Engeman (6:00 and New Jersey sophomore Angelina Iocca (11:57). However, Tiger junior keeper Isabel Robben stopped both.

Later in the half, Kansas senior Cammie Davis got off two shots with Missouri sophomore Emily Flowers and Colorado freshman Taylor McGarrahan having one apiece. There were either blocked by the defense, saved by Robben or went wide of the net. The UNK defense blocked the Tigers only shot of the half at 33:50.

With about 20 minutes remaining in the game Lincoln sophomore keeper Mackenzie Smith recorded a save on a shot taken by freshman Grace Grundhofer. Due to the wind, she had to roll the ball to a teammate. Soon after, the Tigers intercepted a UNK pass that got hung up by the wind. Senior Reilly Madden got control of the ball and found a streaking Mares who got past the defense to record her seventh goal of the fall.

Smith ended with four saves and Robben three. The Tiger reserves accounted for eight shots with Engeman joining Colorado sophomore Dolcie Hanlon and Wyoming Raegan Downham as Lopers to go all 90 minutes.
