UNK Uses Big Run to Beat RSU

Kearney, Neb. – Senior forward Austin Luger had a double double and Nebraska-Kearney went on a 26-6 run to down Rogers State, 68-58, Saturday evening at the Health & Sports Center.

Battling to make the 10-team MIAA Tournament, UNK improves to 10-14 (6-12) and stops a four-game losing streak to RSU. The Lopers are Central Missouri (11-11, 8-10) Thursday night followed by a game at Lincoln (2-19, 1-15) next Saturday.

"I'm extremely proud of our team's effort especially in the second half. Things weren't going our way in the first half but we found a way late to get a couple of baskets," said Loper head coach Kevin Lofton. "We really buckled down defensively in the second half and multiple people contributed."

RSU (14-9, 8-9) came out hot early and grabbed leads of 28-17 and 30-19. However, the Lopers closed the half on an 12-3 run that featured a banked in three pointer from guard David Simental (Pueblo West, Colo.) as the buzzer sounded. That momentum carried over to the next half as the Lopers stormed out of locker room to the tune of a 14-3 run. A triple from redshirt junior guard Parker Badding (Carroll, Ia.) made it 45-36 and UNK only built its lead from there.

"(Simental's three) definitely gave us a shot in the arm. We were only down two and felt like we just had to hang in there," said Lofton. "We knew they were a good team … they beat us by 14 at their place. Down 11 today, we said let's get it to five by halftime."

The Lopers almost made half its shots, used a series of layups and Luger's inside work to have 36 paint points and saw all seven players who hit the courts score at least four points. Badding (16) and Simental (14) joined Luger in double figures with Utah senior froward Darrian Nebeker flirting with a rare triple double; 11 rebounds, nine points and six assists.

"We did a better job of cutting with our offense in the second half. We were able to get guys free and get some easy layups," said Lofton. "Things started to click and that was the Austin we saw last year. It wasn't because he was hitting a bunch of threes. He got some big-time rebounds today and got a couple to go around the basket."

Badding went 3 of 9 from behind the arc to reach double digits for a seventh straight night with Simental having 11 after the break. Next, reserves Winston Cook (Wahoo) and Sean Evans (Parker, Colo.) combined for 12 points, five rebounds and three dimes. Finally, Luger had 13 points and 11 rebounds including six on the offensive end.

Rogers got 11 points from guard Tylan Dean and 10 more from guard Devin Pullum.
