Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Threes & Frees Help Eighmey Reach 200 Wins

Kearney, Neb. – The Nebraska-Kearney women's basketball team sunk eight three pointers and 14 free throws to hold off Rogers State, 70-62, Saturday afternoon at the Health & Sports Center.

The Lopers (19-5, 14-4) move into sole possession of third place in the MIAA standings, right behind Fort Hays State and Missouri Southern State (both 15-3). A trip to defending region champ Central Missouri (16-9, 12-6) is up Thursday night.

By having one of its top perimeter shooting nights of the year, UNK gives head coach Carrie Eighmey her 200th career win (200-97). She is in her seventh season at UNK (132-66) after beginning her career at Hastings College (68-31; three years). Carrie Eighmey

"I feel pretty blessed with the student-athletes that I've been able to coach. You can't (win) unless you have good players, good people. It's really a testament to the teams that we've had and their ability to win games," said Eighmey. "I'm the fortunate one because I've coached a lot of great players. And when you find ways to win games in your career it's because you have a good coaching staff. I have two of the best in the country in Devin (Eighmey) and Bailey (Morris)."

Rogers (10-15, 6-13) also was hot from behind the arc to the tune of a 12 of 23 effort with four of those misses coming late. The Hillcats from Claremore, Okla., struggled at the line (6 of 14) and were minus 12 on the glass but led by five early and never trailed by more than eight.

"Our defense wasn't bad … they just shot it really, really well from the three-point line. Every time they let one go, I thought it was going in," said Eighmey. "We had to defend in space because we had to guard the three-point line so hard."

Junior reserve guard Trinity Law (Brandon, SD) went 4 of 4 from three-point land to tally a team-high 17. Sophomore reserve guard Meg Burns (Ankeny, Ia.) made her only three with starting wing Klaire Kirsch (Rapid City, SD) knocking three of her five trey attempts. Overall, UNK finished 8 of 18 and made 14 of 19 free throws.

UNK erased a 17-16 deficit by going 4 of 6 from triple land in the second quarter. The Blue & Gold didn't trail again but the 'Cats hung around until the end, cutting the deficit to two on three separate occasions in the fourth. However, the Lopers had an answer each time and closed on a 12-6 run.

"It just depends on the day. Today, Shiloh, Klaire and Trinity helped us out offensively quite a bit," said Eighmey. "Collectively we did a good job of getting as many stops as we could, considering how well they were shooting it. They made 12 threes and 10 twos."

Shooting over 50 percent (52.2) for the sixth time this season, UNK got a double double from Kirsch (15 points & 11 rebounds) with starting forward Shiloh McCool (16 points & seven rebounds) getting close. Finally, starting forward Elisa Backes (Salina, Kan.) worked around early foul trouble by having eight points, five assists and three boards.

Rogers got 19 points from Slovenian Vanessa Gajdosova (5 of 9 threes) with two more starters combing for 27 more points. RSU's changing and trapping defense forced 21 UNK turnovers but just tallied 12 points off those miscues. The 21 TO's tied a season-high for the Lopers.

"They were switching it up … man, zone, man, zone. Anytime that happens they want to get you out of rhythm. We expected it and knew it was coming … we just had to feel it out and see what's going to be open and available," said Eighmey. "It was an aggressive zone and we tried to squeeze in some passes."

After Warrensburg, UNK heads to Lincoln (5-19, 1-17) next Saturday.
