Fourth Split of the Year

Kearney, Neb. – Sophomore newcomer Stacy Bott tossed a six-hit complete game and Nebraska-Kearney scored two runs in the top of the seventh to slip past Wayne State, 4-3, Monday afternoon in Topeka, Kan.

These games were part of the Washburn Invite which was pushed back a full day due to cold weather last week. UNK (5-9) fell to Southwest Minnesota State, 6-5, earlier on Monday.

Bott (Thornton, Colo.), a transfer from Northeastern Junior College, earned her first Loper win in style by going the distance. She blanked the Wildcats (2-10) over the final five innings while fanning four and walking just one. Bott allowed six singles as WSC scored a run in the first and two in the second to take a 3-0 lead.

A two-out, two-run single from freshman third baseman Sydney Thomason (Ripon, Cali.) in the third got UNK closer but WSC hurler Hadley Chvatal tossed three shut-out innings. The Lopers used three pinch hitters to start its half of the seventh with junior Bri Healy (Omaha Central) and freshman Lyndsey Roth (Lincoln North Star) reaching base with one down.

An RBI fielder's choice by senior second baseman Abbie Vodicka (Lincoln Pius) tied things up and then senior pinch hitter Hannah Ice (Escondido, Calif.), in her 16th career at-bat as Loper, reached via infield error. That brought home Roth for the game-winner. WSC put one on in the bottom of the seventh but Bott got a fly out to end the game.

Five different Lopers had a hit with UNK now 1-6 in games decided by two runs or less. Unfortunately, the sixth loss came against the Mustangs (5-6) who tallied three in the bottom of the third and two more in the fourth to erase an early 3-0 hole.

Sophomore catcher Katie Gosker (Blair) had a two-run single in the first and finished 2 for 3 with Thomason and senior right fielder Carlee Liesch (Lincoln Pius X) having two hits apiece as well. SMSU got a two-run homer from cleanup hitter Jillian Noel to take the lead for good in the third and after scoring a key unearned run in the first. Bott pitched a scoreless seventh with Mustang freshman Karlie Miller fanning 10 as part of a nine-hit complete game.

Weather permitting, UNK heads to Springfield, Mo., next weekend to face William Jewell (Mo.), NAIA Evangel (Mo.) and tourney host Drury on Saturday-Sunday.
