Mustangs Slip Past the Lopers

Kearney, Neb. – The 23rd-ranked Midwestern State Mustangs won number five singles in three sets to get past 15th-ranked Nebraska-Kearney, 4-3, Tuesday afternoon in Wichita Falls, Texas.

This was the Lopers (6-5) third and final dual of its "Spring Break" trip. UNK hosts Southwest Minnesota State (10-8) this Saturday at Harmon Park. First serve is set for 10 a.m.

MSU won doubles by allowing four combined points in the top two spots but Masha Hatouka (Belarus) and Melisa Becerra (Colombia) fell by just a 7-6 (5) score at number three.

UNK had to shake up its singles line due to injury with Lincoln freshman Clare Plachy stepping up and scoring the first team point thanks to a 7-6 (3), 6-2 decision at number six. Next, Mexican sophomore Jazmin Zamorano won in straight sets at number three but it wasn't easy (7-5, 7-5) and then Colorado freshman Alexis Bernthal tied things at three thanks to a win in the third set (6-1, 6-7, 6-3).

However, the Loper win streak ended at three as sophomore Emilija Visic got past Hatouka in a marathon number five singles match (7-6, 3-6, 7-6).
