UNK Wins Two One-Run Thrillers; Home Opener Saturday

Kearney, Neb. – The Nebraska-Kearney women's softball team ran its win streak to nine games, the longest by the Lopers in 18 years, as it snuck past both Bemidji (Minn.) State, 7-6, and Upper Iowa, 3-2, Sunday afternoon in St. Joseph, Mo.

This was the second and final day of the Fairfield Inn & Suites Classic hosted by Missouri Western State. UNK (14-12) went 4-0 this weekend after starting MIAA play 4-0 last weekend. The win streak started with a 6-2 decision over William Jewell (Mo.) on March 5 and on the last day of the Drury Invite in Springfield, Mo.

This is the program's longest win streak since the 2004 squad strung together 10 wins at the end of the season (April 6-18). After playing its first 26 game away from home (9-9 at neutral sites and 5-3 true road games), the Lopers will be at home next Saturday vs. Fort Hays State. First pitch for the double header at Patriot Park is set for 1 p.m.

In today's late game, UNK broke a 1-1 tie in the top of the fifth when freshman leadoff hitter and designated player Lyndsey Roth (Lincoln North Star) belted a two-out, two-run homer to right center. That is her fifth dinger of the year with the Peacocks tallying a run in its half of the sixth but going down in order in the seventh.

Colorado sophomore lefty Madison Rosenthal earned the win by throwing the first four innings, allowing two earned in six hits and two walks. She also fanned five. Next, California senior Hannah Ice got a hold as she threw two scoreless innings with Colorado sophomore Stacy Bott working a scoreless seventh to pick up a rare save.

UIU's Abby Buckman was the tough luck loser as she tossed a seven-hit complete game. UNK's offense was paced by Colorado senior first baseman Hailey Schaneman (2 for 4, one run) and Omaha sophomore left fielder Abbie Jo Gaube (2 for 3, one RBI).

The Lopers erased an early 2-0 hole against the Beavers (3-17) by scoring five times in the bottom of the second. The big inning featured a two-run double by Roth (1 for 2, two runs) and a two-run single from Schaneman (2 for 4). In the three-hole, California freshman pitcher/shortstop Sydney Thomason was 3 for 4 with a run and two RBI's.

BSU tied things at six thanks to a run in the fourth and three more in the fifth. However, UNK responded once again as Lincoln senior second baseman Abbie Vodicka delivered an RBI single to center with one down in the bottom of the fifth.

Bott relived Thomason (4.2 innings, four earned & four K's) and threw 2.1 scoreless innings to earn in third wins. Like Thomason, she didn't walk a Beaver but fanned three. UNK is now 3-5 in one-run games and 11-0 when leading after the fifth or sixth innings.
