Runner Up in First Spring Tournament

Kearney, Neb. – The Nebraska-Kearney women's golf team shot a 36-hole total of 635 to place second at the annual SMSU Spring Invitational Tuesday in Litchfield Park, Ariz.

This was UNK's first event of the spring. They have three more regular season events before the MIAA Championships in late April.

Southwest Minnesota State was the tourney host at the par 71 (5,702 yards) Wigwam Blue Course. Scores were a bit higher than in previous seasons.

UNK (308) was the first-round leader but shot a 327 today to fall behind Colorado-Colorado Springs (633; 324-309) with Missouri Western (639) and Western New Mexico (640) close behind. In the latest Golf Stat national rankings, the Lopers were 31st and UCCS 40th.

Senior Faviola Gonzalez (Puerto Rico) tied for fourth with a 14-over 156 to be the low Loper. She had rounds of 75 and 81, tied for the second most pars (21) in the tourney and was one-under on par five holes. Allycia Gan of Missouri was the medalist (2-over 149) with Northwest Missouri's Morgan Thiele the runner up (152).

UNK had two others in the top 13 in freshman Brooke King (Overland Park, Kan.) and sophomore Allison Comer (Overland Park, Kan.). King was 4-over on par 3 holes, the second-best average in the tourney, to finish 12th (160; 77-83). Comer managed 19 pars to tie for 13th (161; 83-78).

The other Kearney scorers were Arizona junior Paige Lucero (17th/163; 75-88) and Colombian freshman Juliana Botero Molina (T-25th/166; 81-85). Lucero had 17 pars with Botero Molina one of four Lopers with at least two birdies. Finally, playing as individuals were Bayard sophomore Avery Mitchell (T-45th/173; 88-85), Colombian freshman Sofia Laserna Murra (T-52nd/178; 87-91) and Minden freshman Kendall Colby (T-56th/180; 85-95).

The Lopers head to the El Cheapo Classic in Pueblo, Colo., on March 20-21.
