Lopers Sweeps Pitt State

Kearney, Neb. – Senior Hannah Ice and sophomore Madison Rosenthal combined on six-hitter in game one and sophomore catcher Katie Gosker homered twice in game two to help Nebraska-Kearney sweep Pittsburg State, 5-2 and 15-8, Saturday afternoon in Kansas.

The Lopers (18-14, 8-2) stop a four-game skid against the Gorillas (21-16, 3-9) who've now dropped eight in a row. Before today, UNK's last win over Pitt came in March 2018.

Rosenthal (Johnstown, Colo.) and Ice (Escondido, Calif.) blanked Pitt in five innings in game one while working around seven walks. Rosenthal worked the first 3.1 innings to record her fourth win with Ice throwing the final 3.2 innings to pick up her first save of 2022. She didn't fan or walk a Gorilla in allowing just one earned run.

Offensively, UNK scored one in the first and two in the second to never trail. Senior first baseman Hailey Schaneman (Grand Junction, Colo.) had an RBI single to center in the first with freshman shortstop Sydney Thomason (Ripon, Calif.) having a two-run double to center in the second. She finished 2 for 3 with three RBI's with Schaneman going 2 for 4.

It was a slugfest in the night cap as the teams combined for 23 runs on 32 hits, eight walks and four errors. The Lopers never trailed as they scored four in the first, four in the fifth and four more in the sixth.

The "Blair Bomber", Gosker (3 for 4, two runs & six RBI's) hit a three-run shot to left in the first and a two-run shot to right in the sixth. She now has a team-best nine dingers with her career total of 19 just outside the UNK all-time Top 10. Four others had two hits apiece including Lincoln senior right fielder Carlee Liesch (2 for 5, three runs) and Omaha sophomore left fielder Abbie Jo Gaube (3 for 5).

Colorado sophomore Stacy Bott earned her fourth win by going the first 4.1 innings with Ice earning another save thanks to 2.2 innings of one-run ball.

The Emporia State Hornets (18-18, 7-5) and Washburn Ichabods (28-11, 10-2) come to Patriot Park next weekend That is the start of a rare 12-game home stand, weather permitting.
