Jets Have 19 Singles to Take Double Dip

Kearney, Neb. – Sophomore Madison Dewitt tossed a two-hitter in game one, freshman Janine Gutierrez threw 123 pitches in game two and Newman racked up 19 singles to take a double header from Nebraska-Kearney, 4-1 and 11-9, Thursday afternoon at Patriot Park.

These games were originally set for Saturday afternoon but moved up two days because of weather.

UNK (22-20, 12-8) slips to sixth in the MIAA standings; the top eight teams qualify for the MIAA Tournament May 4-7 in Edmond, Okla. The Lopers face No. 4 Central Oklahoma (38-6, 17-1) tomorrow and are at No. 8 Rogers State (38-6, 15-3) and Northeastern State (23-20, 11-7) next weekend to close out the regular season.

Dewitt recorded her fourth win in 17 decisions by allowing just a single to senior right fielder Carlee Liesch (Lincoln Pius X) in the first and a solo homer to sophomore left fielder Abbie Jo Gaube (Omaha Gross Catholic) in the fifth. The Jets offense was death by a thousand paper cuts as they used 10 singles, several of the bunt variety, to tally runs in four straight innings. They also took advantage of two walks, two errors and a hit batter.

Three Jets had two hits a piece including left fielder and nine-hole hitter Kaitlyn Praught (2 for 3, one run & a RBI). She came in 0 for 12 on the season. For UNK, Colorado sophomore lefty Madison Rosenthal (5-8) allowed just three earned runs in 5.1 innings with Colorado sophomore righty Stacy Bott tossing 1.2 innings of scoreless relief.

UNK out hit NU 16-10 in the nightcap but stranded 11 on the base paths. Gutierrez labored to the tune of 123 pitches (65 strikes), 15 hits and four walks. However, she is now 5-5 on the year. Dewitt earned her first save by recording the final two outs with the Jets striking for three in the fifth and five in the seventh.

The top three hitters in the Newman lineup were a combined 7 for 11 with eight runs and two RBI's. NU broke a 6-6 tie in the seventh thanks to three walks, two hit batters, two singles (one bunt) and a double. UNK countered with a three spot in the bottom of the inning but Dewitt got a strikeout to end the rally.

Liesch (3 for 5, two RBI's), Lincoln senior second baseman Abbie Vodicka (4 for 4, two runs), Gaube (2 for 4, two RBI's) and California freshman shortstop Sydney Thomason (2 for 4, two RBI's) paced the Kearney offense.

The double header vs. UCO is at 12 and 2 p.m. Friday.
