#35 Lopers Battle Top Field in Kansas

Kearney, Neb. – The 35th-ranked Nebraska-Kearney women's golf team shot a 36-hole total of 634 to place 12th at the Newman Spring Invitational Tuesday in Newton, Kan.

The 18-team field, featuring seven nationally-ranked squads, played the par 72 Sand Creek Station Golf Course. The two-day event was hosted by Newman and included 16 Division II varsity teams, one D2 "B" squad and one NAIA school.

UNK had rounds of 323 and 311 to be just 12 strokes out of seventh place. No. 22 Rogers State (604) won with No. 44 Central Oklahoma and No. 15 Henderson (Ark.) State both shooting a 605 to tie for second. The Lopers came in ahead of rivals Fort Hays State and Wayne State as well as MIAA foe Missouri Southern State.

Kansas sophomore Allison Comer and Puerto Rico senior Faviola Gonzalez led UNK as they each tied for 19th (11-over 155). Comer had a 74, one off her career-low round, on day two thanks to two birdies and 13 pars. Gonzalez had rounds of 78 and 77 and carded 22 pars over the two days. Gracen Blount of HSU was the medalist (1-under 143) with Newman's Felisa Sajulga a shot back in second.

UNK's other scorers each tied for 66th (164) and they were Arizona junior Paige Lucero (85-79), Kansas freshman Brooke King (84-80) and Colombian freshman Juliana Botero Molina (81-83). Finally, Bayard sophomore Avery Mitchell played as an individual and shot a 184 (88-96).

The Lopers have a quick turnaround as they head to Wayne next Monday/Tuesday for the Wildcat Classic.
