Ichabods Keep Streak Alive

Kearney, Neb. - The Washburn Ichabods ran its win streak to 12 in a row after taking a double header from Nebraska-Kearney, 7-0 and 4-3, Saturday afternoon at Dryden Park.

WU improves to 32-11 (14-2) and is on the verge of being nationally ranked. The 'Bods haven't lost since March 16 and have now taken 10 of the last 11 against the Lopers (19-17, 9-5).

Sophomore right hander Jaycee Ginter led the way as she picked up her 21st win and second save of the year. She tossed a one-hit complete game to start the day, fanning 10 and walking none. That marked her 16 complete game and fourth shut out of 2022. For an encore, Ginter worked the final two innings of the nightcap, getting out of a seventh inning jam to move her ERA to 1.73. Finally, she has 217 K's to just 46 walks.

Ginter, a left handed batter, helped herself in the second game as she hit a two-run homer to dead center in the third. That staked her team to a 3-0 lead; the inning started with a wind-aided infield single. After blowing out to right on Friday, the winds of over 30 miles per hour blew out to left today.

Lincoln senior right fielder Carlee Liesch (2 for 4) had an RBI single to right center in the bottom of the inning and then Omaha sophomore left fielder Abbie Jo Gaube started the fourth with a deep homer to left. That's her first dinger of the year and third as a Loper. WU used a double and infield single to get that run back in the fifth with Ginter entering in the bottom of the sixth.

She struck out the side but Lincoln senior second baseman Abbie Vodicka (2 for 3, two runs) started the seventh with a single and then California freshman shortstop Sydney Thomason smacked a two-out triple to center. The hit came on a 3-2 pitch with Colorado senior first baseman Hailey Schaneman then drawing a walk. However, Ginter got a pop up to right to end the threat and game.

Colorado sophomore righty Stacy Bott threw 2.1 scoreless innings of relief with UNK out hitting WU, 8-7, but stranding eight.

In game one, WU scored once in the second and fourth, three in the fifth and two more in the seventh. Junior center fielder Kimi Patterson went 4 for 4 with a run and two RBI's from the seven-hole to pace a balanced attack.

Liesch had UNK's lone hit, a sharp single to center, with California senior Hannah Ice allowing no earned runs over the final three innings.

The Lopers host Lincoln (11-24, 0-16) and Central Missouri (13-26, 6-10) next weekend to continue a 12-game home stand.
