Lopers No Hit E-State, Fall to Mo West in MIAA Tourney

Kearney, Neb. – The Missouri Western State Griffons scored three runs in the top of the seventh inning to eliminate Nebraska-Kearney, 7-5, from the 2022 MIAA Tournament Saturday evening in Edmond, Okla.

The seventh-seeded Lopers end the year at 25-27 while fourth-seeded MWSU (30-21) remained on the field to face top-seed Washburn (44-12) in another elimination game Saturday night. The winner faces unbeaten and second-seeded Rogers State (46-9) Sunday for the title.

Colorado sophomore lefty Madison Rosenthal threw a no-hitter Saturday morning to help UNK eliminate eighth-seed Emporia State, 3-1. She (7-10) needed just 88 pitches and got 15 fly outs to record the program's first seven inning no-hitter in nine years.

Rosenthal fanned three, walked two and hit a Griff but didn't allow an earned run. Freshman Sydney Thomason (Ripon, Calif.) belted a two-run shot in the third to provide the winning margin. Becky Dunn, on Valentine's Day 2013, was the last Loper to toss a seven-inning no no (vs. Ouachita Baptist, Ark.; 3-0). There have been three five-inning no-hitters (one solo & two combined) over the last 22 years (2019, 2018 and 2000).

MWSU needed 11 innings to eliminate No. 5 and second-seeded Central Oklahoma, 5-4, in Saturday's second game. The Griffs were swept at home by UNK earlier this year and trailed 2-0 and 4-2 today. However, they scored two in the third and fourth innings, three in the seventh after two were out and then hung on to advance.

The Lopers used two singles and an error to score one in its half of the seventh. A walk put the tying runs on base but a fly out to right ended the rally, game and season. In the top of the inning, MWSU used two singles and a hit batter to load the bases with one down. After a strikeout, first baseman Natalee Weber drew a walk and then pinch hitter Si Culver roped a two-run single to left center.

Freshman designated player and leadoff hitter Lyndsey Roth (Lincoln North Star) went 3 for 4 with a run scored with cleanup hitter and catcher Katie Gosker (Blair) hitting a two-run shot to go 2 for 4. Finally, senior right fielder Carlee Liesch (Lincoln Pius X) went 1 for 4. She and Roth both had two hits in the win over E-State; Liesch ends her career with the fourth most hits (217) in school history as well as the second highest batting average (.397).

2022 SeniorsSophomore Natalie Kissinger (12-11) earned the win for Mo West by throwing five strong innings of relief. UNK got to Griffons star Sydney Rader (2.0 innings, four hits, three earned runs) with DP Chloe Armstrong hitting a two-run dinger in the third.

This was UNK's first-ever MIAA Tournament appearance and first postseason trip since making the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) Tourney in 2012. The 25 wins is the most since that '12 squad recorded 26 victories. Finally, the Lopers went 2-1 against UCO (45-10; will make the NCAA's) this spring.
