Lopers Battle Former Rivals

Kearney, Neb. – A young Nebraska-Kearney volleyball team battled Nebraska-Omaha Saturday afternoon in an exhibition match at Baxter Arena.

The Lopers and Mavericks, old time Division II rivals, met for the first time the fall in over a decade. UNO took all four sets by scores of -16, -19, -22, -22. Statistics are only available for the first three sets.

UNK, playing five first-year payers this afternoon, led early in the second set and led throughout the third before YNO rallied twice. The Mavs, 2021 Summit League Champions and coming off a 20-10 season, were paced by sophomore outside Shayla McCormick who had 14 kills, 12 digs and hit .316. Junior middle McKenna Ruth added nine kills, six blocks and a .364 hitting efficiency. Omaha out hit Kearney .234 to .105, had 14 more kills, three more aces and two more blocks. The Blue & Gold did win the dig battle, 53--50. 

The Lopers saw eight different players record a kill led by veteran outside Emersen Cyza (Alliance), sophomore right side Lauren Taubenheim (Lincoln Pius X) and freshman outside Emilee Lane (Hays, Kan.). They combined for 19 of UNK's 32 kills with Lane's total coming in just the third set. Next, freshman middle Abby Rose (Lindsborg, Kan.) had three blocks with Minden junior defensive specialist Jensen Rowse at a team-best 13 digs. Finally, North Platte redshirt freshman setter Peyton Neff was at 28 assists, six digs and a kill.

UNK starts the regular season at home Friday (Aug. 26) against Minot State and Midwestern State.
