#2 Ichabods Score Final Two Points to Win in Five

Kearney, Neb. – The second-ranked Washburn Ichabods controlled the third and fourth sets and scored the final two points in the fifth to rally past seventh-ranked Nebraska-Kearney (24-26, 22-25, -17, -18, -14) Saturday afternoon in Kansas.

The 'Bods (10-2, 2-0), defending National Runner Up, remain unbeaten while the Lopers drop to 10-1 (1-1). These teams will meet again Oct. 4 at the Health & Sports Center.

WU ended the 2.5 hour match with more kills, digs, blocks and hit 74 points than UNK but the Lopers hung around until the bitter end. After scoring the last five to take the first set, the Lopers tried to score the final four of the match to record the win.

A kill from outside Emersen Cyza (Alliance) and then a block from middle Fallon Stutheit (Johnson) and right side Lauren Taubenheim (Lincoln Pius X) knotted things up at 14. UNK had led 2-0 but then fell behind 9-5 and 11-7. The comeback was not do be, however, as WU got a quick kill from freshman right side Kealy Kiviniemi and then redshirt freshman middle Austin Broadie capped a long rally with another kill.

The 'Bods ended the long day with advantages in kill (67-55), digs (97-89) and blocks (24-20) while hitting .197 to the Lopers .123 effort. UNK served up two more aces, 8-6, and WU had a few more unforced attack and service errors.

A balanced WU attack was led by sophomore outside Jalyn Stevenson (15 kills & 16 digs), Broadie (10 kills & nine blocks), Kiviniemi (10 kills & thee blocks), junior outside Sophie McMullen (12 digs & 26 digs) and senior libero Sydney Pullen (27 digs).

UNK, which controlled the second set, was paced by Cyza's 18 kills in 56 attempts with Stutheit recording 12 in 28 swings (.321 pct.). She also had five blocks as did fellow middle Bailee Sterling (Kearney) and Taubenheim. This pair also combined for 17 kills. Finally, junior libero Jensen Rowse (Minden) had a match-high 31 digs and had a .979 serve receive percentage with setter Peyton Neff (North Platte) at 42 assists and 14 digs.

Newman (6-5, 1-1) and Central Oklahoma (12-0, 2-0) visit next Friday night and Saturday afternoon.
