9/11/2022 3:04:00 PM

Box Score Kearney, Neb. – The Washburn Ichabods scored goals in each half to down Nebraska Kearney, 2-1, Sunday afternoon in Topeka.

This was the non-MIAA game between the two; they meet against net Sunday at Cope Stadium (Sept. 18) in the league affair.

WU moves to 5-0-1 thanks to 19 shots and the defense's fourth shut out to date. They got a goal from freshman Belle Kennedy in the 27th minute to take the lead and then added an insurance goal in almost the 78th minute when Kennedy struck again, this time finding the high center of the goal.

Just 13 seconds later, UNK (0-4-1) got closer as freshman Kea Barnes (Aurora, Colo.) knocked in a free kick from about 33 yadrs out. That is her first collegiate goal and the Lopers first goal of 2022 during the regular season. The Blue & Gold had a good chance to tie but a corner near the 84th minute didn't produce a shot. The Lopers had one other corner with WU at six.

Kennedy and freshman Lakin Rold finished with three shots apiece for the 'Bods with sophomore Khole Schuckman at a team-best six (three on goal). Veteran keeper Raegan Wells earned the win in goal.

Besides Barnes, freshman Emma Middleton (Papillion) had two more shots for UNK with sophomore keeper Mackenzie Smith (Lincoln) stopping eight shots.

The Lopers host Emporia State, a 2021 NCAA Tournament team, Friday night at Foster Field.
