Mountaineers Edge the Lopers

Kearney, Neb. – Western Colorado scored right before halftime to edge Nebraska Kearney, 1-0, Sunday afternoon in Grand Junction, Colo.

The Mountaineers (1-2-1) avenge a 1-0 setback to the Lopers three years ago in a game also held at Colorado Mesa

UNK out shot WCU 9-5 in the first half and 10-8 overall. Seven players had at least one shot led by freshman Emma Middleton (Springfield) with three and senior Payton Rhen (Omaha Skutt) with two. Both of Rhen's shots were on goal.

The lone goal came at 44:36 and less than a minute after one of WCU's seven corners. Freshman Brenna Wolfe found the upper right corner of the net for her first collegiate goal. Defensively, freshman keeper Alex Peralta earned her first collegiate win as she recorded six saves.

UNK hosts Fort Hays State and is at Washburn next weekend. Both games are non-MIAA contests.
