Blue & Gold Sweeps the Green & Gold

Kearney, Neb. – The ninth-ranked Nebraska Kearney volleyball team used another balanced offensive attack and dug up 74 balls to sweep Missouri Southern State (-15, -12, -13) Saturday afternoon at Buckle Court.

UNK (20-1, 10-1) finishes off this home stand Tuesday night against No. 20 Washburn. The Ichabods (13-4, 7-3) have won the past six meetings with the Lopers, dating back to 2021.

To win an 11th straight match and to record its seventh straight sweep, the Blue & Gold out hit the Lions (12-8, 5-6) by almost 200 points and had three players with double digit kill totals. They were senior outside Emersen Cyza (Alliance), graduate right-side Jaden Ferguson (Lincoln SW) and junior outside Asha Regier (Newton, Kan.).

"It was a great weekend for us. We had a big win (over Central Missouri) last night to get back into the conference race," said UNK head coach Rick Squiers. "The thing about our league is you've got to win your home matches. So far, we've been able to do that."

There were just five ties and three lead changes all afternoon as UNK's serve receive and defense frustrated the Lions. They hit just .039 and had 19 fewer digs than the Lopers while also getting aced three times.

"Little bit of a trap game today but I thought our team took the match seriously. The first two sets were back-and-forth to about 10 or 12 points," said Squiers. "In the second half of the second set, I thought we played as well as we can play and that continued into the third set."

Regier had a team-best 12 kills and hit .306 with Ferguson at 13 digs and 11 kills. Next, Cyza supplied 11 kills, five digs and a .310 efficiency with sophomore middle Abby Rose (Lindsborg, Kan.) stepping up for a second straight match. She had six kills and two blocks in playing all three sets.

"I like how we're playing. Ball control is fantastic, server receive game is really good and playing much better defense than earlier in the season," said Squiers.

Finally for the Lopers, senior libero Lauren Taubenheim (Lincoln Pius X) had a career-best 26 digs with sophomore setter Peyton Neff (North Platte) at 41 assists, 10 digs, four blocks, three kills and an ace.

MSSU was led by Fernanda Canedo (14 digs, seven kills) and DS Kyla Randall (17 digs).
