Senior Day Sweep

Kearney, Neb. – Ten different players had a kill and No. 10 Nebraska Kearney served up nine aces to sweep winless Newman (-8, -14, -7) Saturday afternoon at the Health & Sports Center.

This was the 2023 home finale for the Lopers (23-3, 13-3). Prior to first serve, graduate students, super and seniors were honored in Celeste Friesen (Marietta, Ga.), Lauren Taubenheim (Lincoln Pius), Jensen Rowse (Minden), Emersen Cyza (Alliance), Jaden Ferguson (Lincoln SW) and Rhianna Wilhelm (Henderson).
Coach Squiers
Head Coach Rick Squiers sat in with the Pride of the Plains post-match

"We didn't play down a level today. If you look around our league, teams with losing records are beating teams with winning ones. I watched (Newman) tape against Fort Hays State and in two of the sets, they should've won," said UNK head coach Rick Squiers. "So, as a coach, you're always worried about not playing well against a team that doesn't have a lot of wins."

UNK needed just over an hour to extinguish the Jets (0-24, 0-16). Out hitting NU by over 300 points, the Lopers allowed just 19 kills all afternoon and trailed only twice. Junior outside Asha Regier (Newton, Kan.) paced the offense by having 13 kills and hitting .423 with Ferguson having four aces. Three of them came in a row in the first set.

Besides her serving, Ferguson had 11 digs, eight kills, two blocks and hit .280 from the right side with Cyza providing six kills and Wilhelm having two aces. Finally, Taubenheim and Rowse combined for 13 digs. Due to injury, Friesen didn't take to the court today. Outside the seniors, middles Mia Berg (Eureka, Mo.) and Trista Marx (Limon, Colo.) both hit .364 and had five kills.

"It'll be back to the grind (next week). "We have to take it one match at a time, starting with (next) Friday's match," said Squiers. "We must concentrate on going out and playing well. You can play well in any of those matches (final four regular season) and not win. All we can do is keep trying to get better."

The Lopers head to Northwest Missouri and Missouri Western next weekend.
