Loper Season Draws to a Close on a Cold & Snowy Senior Day

Kearney, Neb. – Junior Allison Worley scored in the 51st minute to help Fort Hays State get past Nebraska Kearney, 1-0, Sunday afternoon at Ron & Carol Cope Stadium.

This was the regular season finale for both teams. The Tigers (12-3-3, 8-2-1), who are receiving votes for the Top 25, move onto the eight-team MIAA Tournament next weekend while the Lopers (3-13-2, 2-7-2) are done for 2023.  Cammie Davis

UNK came into the day with a shot at the postseason if it could beat Hays for the first time since 2017 and get wins or ties from both Newman and Northeastern State. However, none of those things happened and the Lopers finish up with eight league points, five short of the postseason (three for a win and one for a tie). NSU, Central Oklahoma and Missouri Western each had 13 points to tie for sixth.

It was an even game over the first 45 minutes as UNK came out strong on a cold, overcast and snowy day. Loper parents and UNK staff helped remove snow from Foster Field so the game could begin at 2 p.m.

Hays had five shots in the first half with the Lopers getting off four. However, keepers Susie Bovaird (Lincoln SE) and Isabel Robben kept the game scoreless until early in the second half. Junior Dolcie Hanlon (Fruita, Colo.) and senior Cammie Davis (Wichita, Kan.) had shots on goal for UNK in the opening half.

"I loved everything about what we did in the first half. It shows that we finally can have a winning mentality and that we know how to compete for those opportunities," said UNK head coach Rob Breton. "The thing we want to learn how to do – the next step -- is to be able to do that every single game, not just on senior day."

About seven minutes after the break, Worley got loose on the right wing and got off an unguarded shot from about 15 yards out. The ball hit a sandbag in the back of the net and then went up and hit the crossbar before Bovaird eventually corralling it near the goal line. After a short discussion, the officials determined it was a goal, the seventh for Worley this fall.

While Hays had the ball in Loper territory a bit more in the second half, UNK had a few solid chances down the stretch. But nothing materialized as a shot from junior Katie Pagel (Aurora, Colo.) sailed wide right with four minutes left. The Loper defense fought off eight corners in the second half and 10 overall.

"In the second half they did a good job of trapping us in some scenarios. When we missed a couple of good chances, we kind of got deterred a little bit and when they put that goal in, it kind of hit us in the face," said Breton. "For about 10 minutes after that, it was like 'oh, we're down, now we need to get two,' instead of just go put one in."

Bovaird finished with five saves and Robben two with sophomores Corynne Olsen (Lincoln SE) and Kea Barnes (Aurora, Colo.) having UNK's other shots. Worley had a team-high three for the Tigers who saw starter Kintzli Wagner leave the game due to an apparent serious knee injury in the first half.

"We still had the fight; we still had the ability to go and do it (create offensive chances). The winning mentality piece is not having to take so long from that hit for it to click. Put value into every game that we play," said Breton. "Since we're creating more chances, the next step is to finish them."

After the game, UNK honored its three super seniors in Davis, Lily Engeman (Olathe, Kan.) and Raegan Downham (Cheyenne, Wyo.) as well as the traditional, four-year seniors in Jacylan Doering (Lincoln Pius) and Aspen Brandich (Colorado Springs).

"This group has meant a lot to me since the day I got here (spring 2022). Three of them are my captains and they are the epitome of why this program is going to turn into what it should be," said Breton. "Because everything they went through as student-athletes, through all the adversity they dealt with, they were still able to be positive and pro-active and accept the idea of change. They committed to the idea of we're going to work, we're going to compete, we're going to challenge ourselves. That's was huge for our team and hopefully that transfers to the underclassmen."
