Lopers Hold Off the Mustangs to Start 2-0

Kearney, Neb. – Super senior post Shiloh McCool had 23 points and 18 rebounds to help Nebraska Kearney hold off Southwest Minnesota State, 76-68, Saturday night in Marshall, Minn.

The Lopers move to 2-0 on the young season while the Mustangs, who were picked fourth in the preseason NSIC poll, fall to 0-2.

UNK led for 36 minutes and was seemingly in a comfortable position up 72-58 with 6:22 to play. It was their biggest lead of the evening, but SMSU responded with a 9-0 run. They could've closed the deficit some more but missed a three with 1:30 left and then a shot in the lane soon after. The Lopers, who didn't make a field goal in the last 6:22, closed things out by going 4 of 6 at the line.

McCool (Pleasant Hill, Ia.) recorded her 20th career double double in style by going 10 of 18 from the field, 3 of 7 at the line and grabbing six offensive and 12 defensive boards. She set the school single-game rebound record (19) in last year's season-finale vs. Fort Hays State. Finally, the point tally is two off her career-best effort.

UNK outshot SMSU by a 53-28% margin but the 'Stangs overcame that by going 10 of 42 from behind the arc. They also grabbed 19 o-boards which led to 14 points. Finally, the Lopers were plus 15 on the glass and overcame 27 turnovers by making 13 freebies.

Besides McCool's heroics, guard Trinity Law (Brandon, S.D.) had 12 points, four boards and two assists, wing Meg Burns (Ankeny, Ia.) had 10 points, five rebounds and two assists with reserves Jordan Sears (McPherson, Kan.) and Bailee Sobczak (Rapid City, S.D.) at seven points apiece. Law had three of UNK's five triples with Sobczak grabbing four o-boards.

Four SMSU players were in double figures including starters Bri Stoltzman (16) and Peyton Blandin (12).

UNK hosts NAIA Central Christian (Kan.) on Tuesday night to kickoff the 2023-24 home state
