Lopers Clipped by the Jets Again

Kearney, Neb. – The Newman Jets used a balanced attack, a couple of big runs and took advantage of 19 turnovers to down Nebraska Kearney, 90-72, Friday night in Wichita.

NU (5-5, 2-3) beats the Lopers (4-5, 2-3) for a third straight time and improves to 5-2 at home. Their other MIAA victory came against Central Missouri.

Things started off all right for UNK as it led 21-14 seven minutes in. Point guard Miguel Robles (East L.A.) had five early points, junior Sean Evans (Parker, Colo.) converted a three-point play and junior Taden King (Rexburg, Idaho) knocked down a three. However, Newman responded with a 28-11 run to not only open a double-digit lead but also never trail again.

A Robles bucket started the second half and shaved the NU advantage to just three, 42-39, but the Jets were about to take off again. A paint jumper from 6-5 junior guard Boston Stanton III made it 52-41 at the 15:54 mark and then Newman tallied seven points in 58 seconds to zoom ahead, 59-42. The Lopers didn't get closer than nine points the rest of the night with the key spurt featuring two UNK turnovers and a Jet three.

Having 10 players in the scoring column, Newman knocked down seven triples in the second half, tallied 18 points off UNK turnovers and was plus two on the boards. They came in with a minus three rebound margin on the year. Finally, the Jets went 18 of 24 at the line and saw two Lopers foul out.

UNK shot a respectable 44% from the floor but was just 6 of 21 from behind the arc. The 19 turnovers were a season-high total and they also missed six freebies. Individually, King came in with 14 caroms but had a game-high 12 (11 defensive) while also having eight points and three dimes. Next, Evans and California junior Damiri Lindo had 15 points apiece with Evans adding five assists and Lindo drawing six fouls. Finally, New Zealand junior Sean Murphy got close to a double double (18 points, nine rebounds) thanks to a big second half. He was 6 of 9 from the field and 6 of 7 at the line to tie his career-high point total.

Newman saw four starters and a reserve score in double figures. Veteran guard Stevie Strong warmed up in the second half to lead the way (19 points, seven assists), Stanton III added 14 points off the bench and senior guard Latike Murphy joined Strong as Jets with three made triples.

UNK hosts the Bethany Swedes Tuesday night at 6 p.m. to close out the first semester. Bethany (2-7) is at Doane on Saturday afternoon.
