Lopers Start Long Road Swing with a Big Win

Kearney, Neb. – Graduate student Shiloh McCool recorded her 23rd career double double and reached 800 career rebounds to help Nebraska Kearney smother Newman, 69-42, Friday night in Wichita.

The Lopers (9-2, 3-2) start a rare five-day road trip with a win while the Jets (1-10, 0-5) are still looking for their first victory against a Division II foe this year. On Monday, UNK is at Central Oklahoma with the new start time being 1:30 p.m.

UNK completely dominated the first 20 minutes to the tune of a 20-4 first quarter lead and a 34-10 advantage at the break. Averaging 62 points coming in, NU was just 2 of 24 (8.3%) from the field and committed 14 turnovers. The Lopers lead could've been bigger as they made 12 of their first 30 shots (40%).

"I thought we played hard, played well especially defensively in the first half for sure. We tried to get some people into the game so, overall, we played okay," said UNK head coach Drew Johnson on the KRVN Radio post-game show. "We lost the flow offensively a little bit and they got hot some on defense."

Playing 12 players with none seeing more than 28 minutes of work, UNK's lead didn't get too much bigger in the second half as NU warmed up a bit and used a full-court press late. They had a 13-point third quarter and tallied 19 in the fourth thanks to seven made free throws.

"In the second half, we turned it over too much and fouled them an unbelievable number of times," said Johnson. "So, there are some things with that second group we've got to clean up."

McCool (Pleasant Hill, Ia.) had 11 points and 10 rebounds (four offensive) to pace the UNK attack. Going 6 of 9 from the field, she is the third Loper to have 23 double doubles, tied for second most in school-history. Next, McCool is the eighth UNK woman (801) to reach 800 career rebounds.

Also for the Blue & Gold, starters Kia Wilson (St. George, Kan.) and Meg Burns (Ankeny, Ia.) had nine points apiece with senior reserve Lexi Moes (Smithville, Mo.) at seven boards, four points and two assists. Finally, junior Samantha Moore (Mullen) hit three treys in the fourth quarter to tally nine.

Newman was led by senior guard Carissa Beck (15 points) and 6-2 Latvian post Valeriya Lioukina (10 points, seven rebounds, five fouls drawn).
