Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Lopers Secure Share of MIAA Title

Kearney, Neb. – The 10th-ranked Nebraska Kearney women's basketball team got another game-winning bucket from forward Shiloh McCool and Maegan Holt hit three triples in the third quarter to help the Lopers get past Pittsburg State, 70-67, Saturday in Kansas.

UNK (26-3, 19-2) wins a 13th straight game and secures a share of its first regular season league title in 19 years. During the win streak, seven of the wins have come by five points or less. The Blue & Gold can win the MIAA 2023 crown outright next Saturday afternoon with a win over rival Fort Hays State.

UNK trailed 45-35 with seven minutes left in the third quarter before Holt (Council Bluffs, Ia.) hit her first trey and then point guard Sarah Schmitt (Swisher, Ia.) followed with a three-point play. That made it 47-41 Gorillas but Holt then sunk back-to-back triples to tie the game and swing the momentum.

A back-and-forth fourth quarter saw a driving layup McCool make it 64-63 Lopers with 26 seconds left. She won Thursday night's game at Missouri Southern with a similar shot. After a block by Kansas super senior Elisa Backes, Schmitt sunk two freebies to push the lead to three. Pitt, up 58-53 with left, opted it to make it a one-possession game but Schmitt followed with another two makes. Grace Pile, an 83% shooter at the line, could've tied the game but missed the first of three freebies with a second left; Schmitt followed with two makes to complete the scoring.

Schmitt went for 20 thanks to six made shots and a 7 of 7 effort at the line. South Dakota super senior Klaire Kirsch had a double double (16 points, 10 rebounds) with McCool at 12 points and five boards. Kirsch had a key banked in three to cut into that 58-53 deficit. UNK was plus 10 on the boards and went 11 of 12 at the line; Pitt was 10 of 13 from the stripe but missed two late.

Head coach Carrie Eighmey is now tied with Carol Russell for second most wins (163) in school-history. Eighmey is in her eighth year while Russell was head coach for eight years as well.

All five Pitt starters scored in double figures including Harper Schriener (16 points, seven rebounds, five assists).

UNK hosts rival Fort Hays State next Saturday.
