#44 Lopers Start Weekend with a Win

Kearney, Neb. – The 44th-ranked Nebraska-Kearney women's tennis team won four singles matches in straight sets to rally past Newman, 4-3, Friday afternoon in Wichita.

The MIAA dual was pushed back an hour to noon and played indoors due to inclement weather. The Lopers (10-8, 1-2) have now beaten the Jets (7-5, 0-2) each of the past three springs.

Featuring 62nd-ranked Dana Issabayeva from Kazakstan, this NU squad is much improved. They won doubles by allowing just three combined points at two and three. Issabayeva was at two with Brazil senior Isabela Bifano.

All six singles matches were decided in straight sets with 42nd-ranked Melisa Becerra (Colombia) sweeping Issabayeva in the top spot (6-1, 7-6; 7-2). Next, sophomore Narindra Ranaivo (Madagascar) won her 13th dual singles match (6-3, 6-4) at three with sophomore Alexis Bernthal (Boulder, Colo.) taking her number four match by the same score. Finally, sophomore Masha Hatouka (Belarus) rolled at the fifth spot in the lineup (6-2, 6-2).

UNK heads to Emporia State on Saturday.
