Northwest Takes MIAA Opener

Kearney, Neb. – The 28th-ranked Northwest Missouri State Bearcats downed 22nd-ranked Nebraska Kearney, 6-1, Thursday afternoon at the Ernest Grundy Tennis Center.

This was the MIAA opener for both with the 'Cats now 7-3 and the Lopers falling to 8-6. Northwest has now won seven straight in the series, dating back to April 2017.

Juniors Melisa Becerra (Colombia) and Jazmin Zamorano (Mexico) won 7-5 at number one doubles but the 'Cats allowed just four points in the other two matchups to move ahead 1-0 on the score board.

The lead increased to 3-0 after a pair of straight set wins with Spanish junior Angela Per Moreno adding another at number four to clinch the dual. Becerra did pick up her ninth singles win of the dual season (6-1, 4-6, 7-5) in the top spot. Finally, sophomore Narindra Ranaivo (Madagascar) did take set two at number three (1-6, 6-1, 2-6).

UNK hosts No. 21 Washburn tomorrow at 11 a.m. The Ichabods (5-2) faced Fort Hays State later on Thursday at the Grundy.
