Lopers Split with #17 Ichabods

Kearney, Neb. – Freshman Faith Gaynor threw 5.1 strong innings and junior lefty Madison Rosenthal recorded a save to help Nebraska-Kearney upset 17th-ranked Washburn, 3-2, in game one of a double header Saturday in Topeka.

The Ichabods (31-9, 10-6) rebounded to take the nightcap, 7-0, as freshman lefty Sadie Walker fanned seven in six innings.

To stop a five-game losing streak to WU, the Lopers (14-24, 5-9) watched Gaynor (6-9) need just 65 pitches to get through the first 5.1 innings. The California native issued just one walk and four hits while getting the 'Bods to ground out 11 times.

UNK moved ahead 2-0 in its half of the third on the strength of a two out, two-run RBI double from Blair senior catcher Katie Gosker. Wahoo freshman second baseman Mary Chvatal added a key insurance run in the sixth when she hit a sac fly to center, scoring pinch runner Marisa Chamberlin (Kearney).

That was a big since the 'Bods struck for two in the bottom of the inning and had the tying run at second with one down. However, Rosenthal (Johnstown, Colo.) got a line out and strike out to get out of the jam. She got the same result in the seventh after WU drew a walk to start the inning. Finally, California freshman shortstop Sydney Thomason went 2 for 4 from the leadoff spot with WU pitcher Jaycee Ginter (21-6) taking a rare loss.

WU out hit UNK 12-3 in the second game, scoring runs in four different innings. The eight, nine and leadoff hitters combined to go 7 for 8 with six runs and three RBI's. In the circle, Walker threw 100 pitches to to 5-3 this spring. She walked just one Loper with Gosker having a double. Gaynor allowed two earned over the final three innings with three Loper hurlers combining for three K's.

UNK heads to Lincoln and Central Missouri next weekend
