Rare Wet Day at Foster Field

Kearney, Neb. – The Drury University Panthers scored in the 23rd and 67th minutes to down Nebraska Kearney, 2-0, on a soggy Sunday afternoon at Ron & Carol Cope Stadium.

The game was delayed almost a full hour to a 3 p.m. start as two lightening delays setback the early contest between Quincy (Ill.) and Eastern New Mexico. That game, in driving rain at times, featured five second half goals and a 3-3 tie.

Drury (3-1-0), from Springfield, Mo., and the Great Lakes Valley Conference, controlled the action throughout as they had 11 second half corners and 11 first half shots. UNK's defense blocked many of those offensive chances with Lincoln junior keeper Mackenzie Smith recording six saves.

"They are a very good team, and they knew how they wanted to play. They forced us to play their game and dictated the tempo," said Loper head coach Rob Breton. "With this weather, during warmups, you have to prepare the way the ball will skip off the turf. It didn't make that big of a difference but it demands of you to play a better technical game. We ran into some issues as our passes were bouncing into people rather than being smooth on the carpet."

The Panthers got on the board midway through the half when junior Tara Simon darted in from the right side to record her second goal of the season. She had a team-best seven shots on the day including three on goal.

"We gifted a goal to them on the corner by given a free open runner. On their first goal, you got to give (Simon) credit. That was a heck of a cut in, back post. Absolutely smashed it and that was a great stroke," said Breton.

UNK got a first half shot from Bolivian junior newcomer Ivana Siles with Lincoln sophomore Corynne Olsen and Kansas sophomore Reagan Downes getting off shots on goal down the stretch. However, Siles' attempt sailed wide with DU keeper Kaitlin Knetzke making two saves.

Drury added an insurance goal in the second half when senior Andrea Camargo headed in a corner taken by sophomore Elena Perez.

"I took away we weren't willing to give up and even though we were being pressed by a 3-5-2, that we still had opportunities to go forward," said Breton. "The game also identified some cues and triggers that we need to teach players how to recognize and problem solve in situations a little bit better."

UNK plays non-league games against Fort Hays State (Fri.) and Washburn (Sun.) next weekend. The contest vs. the Ichabods kicks at 2 p.m.
