Homestand Starts with a Sweep

Kearney, Neb. – Graduate transfer Jaden Ferguson had 10 kills and hit .588 to help 10th-ranked Nebraska Kearney sweep Doane (-10, -17, -21) Monday night at the Health & Sports Center.

This was the start of a four match homestand for the Lopers (11-1). Central Oklahoma (11-1) visits Thursday night followed by Pittsburg State on Friday and Fort Hays State next Tuesday.

Ten different Tigers (2-11), led by former Loper setter Jenna (Rouzee) Jones, saw action tonight with 14 different UNK players hitting the court. The Blue & Gold also rested some starters with a big MIAA week ahead.

"(The match) served its purpose in that we got some people on the floor. It was an opportunity for several players to be out there for long stretches," said UNK head coach Rick Squiers. "The match went how you hoped it would."

Ferguson (Lincoln SW) reached her team-high kill total in 17 swings while also providing two digs and two block assists. On the young season, the 2022 All-American leads the team in points (142.0), kills (113) and blocks (33) while hitting .354.

"She's that Swiss army knife type of player. Every day we find out 'oh, you can do that?' Okay we'll have you do that then," said Squiers. "It's nice to have a player like that on the floor and she's really settled in."

There were just six ties and two lead changes all night as UNK out hit DU by a .388-.095 margin. The Lopers also had 16 more digs and served up four aces.

Nine UNK players were between two-eight kills and that large group included sophomore outside Emilee Lane (Hays, Kan.), freshmen middles Mia Berg (Eureka, Mo.) and Sydney Davis (Dannebrog) and freshman outside Carly Purdy (North Platte). Davis hit .636 (7-0-11) with Berg at an even .500.

"Sydney, Carly and Emilee played well as did a few others," said Squiers. "Emilee has to continue to be a part of what we're doing."

Defensively, Georgia senior libero Celeste Friesen had a team-best 14 digs, four assists and two aces with Kansas sophomore middle Abby Rose at four blocks (two solo).

Doane was paced by Taylor Sluka (eight kills, three digs, two blocks) and Frankie Curren-Graff (six kills).
