UNK and Mo West Tie Again

Kearney, Neb. – Junior Ivana Siles scored in the 78th minute to help Nebraska Kearney tie Missouri Western State, 1-1, Friday night at the Health & Sports Center.

The Lopers (1-7-1, 0-1-1) tie the Griffons (3-3-3, 1-0-1) for a second straight year and for the third time in the last six meetings.

On an unusually hot fall night the pace was face, furious and physical throughout. UNK out shot MWSU, the Griffs took two more corners with the teams combining for 19 fouls and several more that weren't called.

"Everything about that game was high intensity, high pressing, high energy," said Loper head coach Rob Breton. "Only word you can use is high for everything. It was phenomenal. The girls fought, they wanted it, they showed it, they competed."

Siles (Bolivia) recorded her first goal as a Loper after sophomore Reagan Downes (Olathe, Kan.) found sophomore Corynne Olsen (Lincoln SE) open in the left corner. Olsen used her left foot to send a perfect pass to the center of the box where Siles was Johnny-on-spot. In two years at Cochise (Ariz.) College, she scored 12 goals.

"We showed moments of brilliance tonight in our passing patterns. You can see something clicked and they said we can do this," said Breton. "It was a great pass by Corynne and you've got to give credit to Ivana. Some players just know how to be in the right place at the right time."

MWSU's goal came at 35:35 and after junior Lauren Nylound stopped a Loper advance at the Griff 30-yard line by heading the ball to fellow defender Nicoletta Froehlich. From the MWSU 40-yard line, she sent a long ball the was headed by a Loper defender, bounced backwards and found senior Jaden Skinner one-on-one with another defender near the right box. Unfortunately for UNK, the defender fell after trying to head the ball with Skinner then lacing one into the left lower third for her fifth goal of 2023.

"In that situation, we don't need to go up for that (second header). Because if she loses it, that's a terrible area," said Breton. "But that also was an absolute rocket (by Skinner)."

UNK almost tied things up sooner after but a penalty kick from Downes was just high. With the second half clock winding down, the Lopers almost got a shot toward the Griffs goal after a free kick. However, the attempt was blocked by the defense.

"There were things that happened tonight that we fundamentally talked about in preseason. It's finally beginning to register," said Breton. "Last 10 seconds in the game we even got a chance. We had a bunch of creations tonight."

Eight Lopers had a shot including two from both Siles and junior Rachel Warrick (Lincoln SE). Freshman keeper Susie Bovaird (Lincoln East) made three saves with counterpart Keeley Kroonenberg stopping four. Skinner (four) had almost half her team shots.

UNK hosts Northwest Missouri State (3-4-2, 0-2-0) on Sunday at 1 p.m. The Bearcats fell tonight at Fort Hays State, 1-0.
