UNK Battles Wind & Bearcats in a 0-0 Draw

Kearney, Neb. – The Nebraska Kearney women's soccer team fought to a scoreless draw with Northwest Missouri State Sunday afternoon at Ron & Carol Cope Stadium.

The Bearcats (6-2-6, 4-1-3) came in with a 4-1-2 road record with the Lopers (5-4-5, 1-4-3) now up to six points in the league standings. Additionally, this marks the program's 40th all-time draw.

Northwest had about a 20 mile per hour win at its back in the first half, but UNK still managed to be even in shots at six apiece. After the break, the Lopers outshot the 'Cats by an 11-2 margin. Northwest did have all three corners in the contest.

"It was even in the first half even though we were going against the wind. We had a couple of great chances in the first half, and we've got to be able to finish those," said Loper head coach Rob Breton. "It's steps for us. They are believing and finding out how we can play our game without allowing the opponents to dictate anything."

Freshman Serene Hamzeh (Iowa City) had four shots, three on goal, on the strength of several free kicks. Next, junior forward Hanna Schimmer (Council Bluffs) had a team-best five shots and created multiple chances in Bearcat territory. Finally, junior Kea Barnes (Aurora, Colo.) and sophomore Jordan Renard (Lincoln NE) had two shots apiece.

"We're locked in positionally, both offensively and defensively," said Breton. "The girls have found their belief again. Some people have stepped up as leaders which is huge for us. The first half of the season we were confident and doing a lot of good things. Unfortunately, we started to let some things slide. The captains and leadership group stepped up and demanded more in these moments."

Northwest came in with 22 goals on the fall but couldn't get the ball past keeper Susie Bovaird (Lincoln East). She had five saves including a big one down the stretch with her defensive also clearing the ball right after.

"The one chance we gave up (in the last 10 minutes) the defense stepped up. We had three clearances on the end line. Susie saved one and the defenders said, 'You know what, we're going to protect you and keep it off the line.' That's just huge progress for the team," said Breton.

The Lopers have just one game next weekend, a Friday night affair vs. Emporia State. The Hornets (5-5-2, 3-3-1) fell this afternoon at Northeastern State, 2-1. It'll be "Senior Night" with seven Lopers being honored postgame.

"The girls will have a whole different level of enthusiasm for that game," said Breton.
