Sweep of the Jets on Senior/Grad Day, Home Finale

Kearney, Neb. – The fifth-ranked Nebraska Kearney volleyball team finished up its 2024 home slate by sweeping Newman (-18, -15, -18) Saturday afternoon at Buckle Court.

The Lopers (24-1, 11-1) spend the final two weeks of the regular season on the road before heading to St. Joseph, Mo., for the MIAA Tournament (Nov. 21-23). Hopefully, a 25th consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance follows the first week of December.

Today UNK got double digit kills totals from outsides Carly Purdy (North Platte) and Asha Regier (Newton, Kan.) and middle Mia Berg (Eureka, Mo.). They trio combined for 42 of UNK's 49 kills as the Lopers trailed only once but still had to work to beat the Jets (3-23, 0-12).

"These guys just kept fighting back. These guys were more than happy to be playing so we were going to have to keep scoring," said Squiers. "Credit to them because when you don't have a conference win on the board, it shows character."

Like on Friday night in a sweep of Pittsburg State, UNK came out fast to the tune of an 8-0 start. They then got out to an 8-3 lead in the second but were up just 19-17 in the third set before a late closing run.

"They caught our attention after last night's effort in Hays, Kansas (3-1 loss to Fort Hays State). They were in a very winnable match, and I was able to watch the film this morning. It really should have gone five," said Squiers. "There's always a few extra emotions on Senior Day but we were able to pull things together early and get off to that quick start."

Berg hit a team-high .450 (10-1-20), Regier came in at .321 (12-328) with senior right side Lauren Vandenberg (David City) appearing in two sets and having three kills, three digs and a block assist. Holding NU to a .136 hitting efficiency, UNK got five blocks and nine digs from graduate right side Lauren Taubenheim (Lincoln Pius) and 13 digs from senior DS Addyson Mock (Stilwell, Kan.). Finally, grad libero Alli Wiese (Mattwan, Mich.) had nine digs, four assists and two aces.

Newman was paced by 6-3 senior middle Ozioma Ajekwu (eight kills) and senior outside McKenna Rhodes (seven kills, three blocks).
