Lopers Finish Tough Fall Slate, Go 1-1 in Lincoln

12/20/2024 10:39:00 PM

Kearney, Neb. – Senior Jacobi Deal and juniors Crew Howard and Trenton Munoz each went 2-0 to help fifth-ranked Nebraska Kearney beat eighth-ranked Augustana, 28-11, and battle fourth-ranked Nebraska, 28-17, Friday night in Lincoln.

The Lopers finish up the fall semester with a 4-3 record that includes three setbacks to three Top 20 Division I teams; the 'Huskers, Northern Iowa and Arkansas-Little Rock.

Deal (Durham, N.C.) and Munoz (Santa Clarita, Calif.) recorded upsets with Howard (Clarinda, Ia.) remaining unbeaten on the season. Additionally, third-ranked Zach Ourada (Omaha Skutt) blanked top-ranked Jaxson Rohman of Augie, 6-0, to start the action.UNK Augie Dual

In the afternoon, UNK got out to a 10-0 lead and then added two majors to hold off the Vikings (1-3). Last year at the National Duals, Rohman slipped past Ourada by a 5-4 score thanks to a third-period takedown. Today, Rohman was dinged for stalling in the second period and then Ourada added an escape, takedown and riding time in the third. Next, Kansas Hector Serratos built up riding time as well and had a third-period takedown to win 9-0 at 133-pounds with Colorado sophomore Joseph Airola using a late takedown to win 4-2 one class higher.

At 157-pounds, Minnesota redshirt freshman Cael Robb tallied the match's only point – a third-period escape – with Munoz having three takedowns as part of a 14-5 major. Finally, Deal used an early takedown to upset seventh-ranked Cade Mueller with Howard scoring eight of his 15 points in the third.

Both the 'Huskers and Lopers had some starters out with UNL recording five tech falls and a decision to win. Ourada grabbed an early 3-0 lead over redshirt freshman Alan Koehler but fell, 11-7, with Munoz using a second period takedown to trail eighth-ranked Bubba Wilson by just a 7-6 margin at 165-pounds. However, Wilson had to forfeit at 4:06, allowing Munoz to get the win and put UNK on the scoreboard.

Two classes higher, Deal used a 4-point near fall in the early going to edge redshirt freshman Ethan DeLeon, 6-2, with third-ranked Jackson Kinsella (Creston, Ia.) and Howard rolling at the final two weights. They combined for six takedowns with Howard now 12-0 and Kinsella 9-4.

UNK is off until the National Duals Jan. 10-11 in Cedar Falls, Ia. The brackets will be announced for that event early in the New Year.
