#3 Ichabods Take MIAA Opener

Story Links

Kearney, Neb. – Three starters and a reserve scored in double figures to help third-ranked Washburn down Nebraska Kearney, 87-52, Thursday night at the Health & Sports Center.

This was the MIAA opener for both teams with the rematch set for February 1 in Topeka. Washburn (8-0) has a scoring margin of 23.0 points per game with its closest affair being an 81-73 win over William Jewell (Mo.).

Omaha redshirt senior Chase Thompson hit a right wing three to start scoring, but it was all Ichabods from there. They shot 53% from the, 41% from behind the arc,  finished plus 17 on the glass and had 19 fast break points.

Individually, sophomore guard Jack Bachelor went for a game-high 19 points on 5 of 8 three-point shooting with fellow starter and guard Bryaden Shorter sinking 4 of 8 long range shots to tally 16. Next, senior transfer guard Jacob Hanna was at 15 points and seven rebounds with senior reserve guard Jake Schaegg supplying 10 points. Finally, Omaha freshman reserve Dillon Claussen got close to a double double (nine points, team-best eight boards).

Still battling the injury bug, UNK dressed just 10 players. Thompson (16) and Arkansas graduate guard Allen Taylor (10) combined for 26 points and as well as eight rebounds with six others between two-six points. That included Mullen redshirt freshman wing Clayton Moore (six points, six boards).

The Lopers host Central Missouri Saturday at 4 p.m. The Mules (4-4) lost in double overtime tonight at Fort Hays State, 70-67.
