Lopers Beat the Mustangs, Fall to the Vulcans

Kearney Neb. – Freshman Lauryn Haggadone threw 4.1 strong innings and Nebraska Kearney struck for three first inning runs to beat Western New Mexico, 5-2, Friday night in Tucson, Ariz.

The game was part of the four-day Division II Cactus Classic. Hawai'i-Hilo (2-0) ended UNK's 3-0 start by taking the late game, 5-1.

Haggadone (York) struck out four and allowed two earned on two walks and six hits. She blanked the Mustangs (3-4) in three innings with sophomore Madeline Janssen (Earlham, Ia.) earning her second save. She gave up just two hits and didn't walk a batter over the final 2.2 innings.

The Lopers were led at the plate by junior catcher Jaiden Harteker (Windsor, Colo.) who went 2 for 3 with a run and RBI from the cleanup spot. The five RBI's came from hitters two through six in the lineup with the bottom of the first featuring four singles and a rare foul ball sac fly.

UHH (2-0) scored four runs over the first two innings and got a complete game five-hitter from junior Tehani Seto. She fanned two, walked two and shut out the Lopers over the final three frames.

The Vulcans recorded 10 hits with right fielder Rayna White (3 for 3, one run & one RBI) and center fielder Maya Lee Saneishi (2 for 3, one run) causing the most damage. Overall, seven different players had a hit with a three-run second including two walks and two wild pitches.

For UNK, junior first baseman Leah Jurgens (Lincoln) was 2 for 3 with a run and freshman Daniella Morillas (Newcastle, Calif.) allowed just one run over final four innings. Finally, both teams left the bases loaded, UNK in the second and UHH in the thid.

Weather permitting, UNK faces Adams State and San Francisco State on Saturday.
