UNK Pulls Off Historic Win Over No. 4 Flagler

Kearney, Neb. – The Nebraska-Kearney women's tennis team earned one of the biggest wins in school history when it upset fourth-ranked Flagler (Fla.) College, 4-2, Saturday afternoon at the Ernest Grundy Tennis Center.

This was day two of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Women's Team Indoor Championships. With the win, the Lopers (5-1) advanced to the fifth-place match on Sunday at 11 a.m. against the 14th-ranked Wayne (Mich.) State Warriors.

UNK took the doubles point against the top-ranked Barry Buccaneers on Friday night and did again today as senior Melisa Becerra (Colombia) and junior Narindra Ranaivo (Madagascar) dominated the tie breaker at number two, 7-6 (7-0). Senior lefty Jazmin Zamorano (Mexico) and freshman Fabiana Gamboa (Zimbabwe) already had won 6-4 at number three.

In singles, the Saints won one and two, but the Lopers took the dual thanks to wins in the next three spots. Zamorano got past Charlotta Buss at two (6-4, 7-6; 7-2), Becerra rolled at four (6-2, 6-0) with Colorado junior Alexis Bernthal coming back to get past Romanian junior Laura Jipescu (3-6, 6-2, 6-2). Finally, Belarus junior Masha Hatouka was in a battle at six when that match was stopped.

On the other side of the bracket, Barry beat West Alabama, 4-1, to reach the finals again. They'll face the rival Nova Southeastern Sharks, a 4-0 winner against WSU. Finally, Flagler and Columbus (Ga.) State will fight for seventh-place with UWA and St. Leo (Fla.) in the third-place match.
