Griffs Get Past the Lopers

Kearney, Neb. – Junior wing Taye Fields posted a double double to help Missouri Western State down Nebraska Kearney, 72-60, Saturday evening in St. Joseph.

With the effort, the Griffs (15-6, 9-6) stopped a three-game losing streak and avenge a 93-90 setback to the Lopers earlier this year.

Fields, a longtime nemesis to the Lopers, went for 22 points (7 of 11 shooting; 7 of 9 free throws) and 10 rebounds as MWSU led for the final 39:33. They shot 48% from the field, were plus one on the glass and took advantage of 10 Loper turnovers.

True freshman guard D'Aundre Samuels (Denver) paced UNK with 21 points, eight rebounds and three dimes. He made 9 of 15 shots (1 of 3 threes) and sunk both free throws he attempted. His season-best of 22 points came in December against Bethany (Kan.) College. Next, California redshirt junior wing Damiri Lindo (17) and Colorado junior guard Sean Evans (11) combined for 28 points. They each hit two threes, but the Lopers were just 5 of 22 from behind the arc.

Besides Fields heroics, MWSU got 14 points, five boards and three dimes from senior wing JaRon Thames with fellow starter Kiani Saxon at 10 points on 4 of 8 shooting. Mo West led 32-23 at the half and started the second half strong to push its lead to double digits.

UNK hosts Central Oklahoma and Newman next weekend.
