UNK Drops a Pair in St. Joe; Home Non-Con Games Next Up

Kearney, Neb. – The Missouri Western State Griffons hit three home runs in game one, including a Grand Slam, and third baseman Myah Dwyer went 3 for 4 with four RBI's in the night cap to help beat Nebraska-Kearney, 12-4 (5 innings) and 7-3, Sunday in St. Joseph, Mo.

This was MIAA opening weekend with this double header pushed back a full day due to inclement weather on Friday.

MWSU (14-4, 4-0) was paced at the plate in both games by right fielder Mackenzie DeVine and Dwyer. Batting one-two in the lineup, DeVine was a combined 1 for 3 with a Grand Slam, five walks drawn, and two runs scored while Dwyer went 5 for 6 with seven RBI's.

In game one, Norfolk senior Sydney Rader moved to 8-1 by allowing two earned runs on two walks and six hits over the first four innings. MWSU scored seven in the second, three in the third and two more in the fourth. Devin's dinger came in the big second inning with first baseman Ashlyn Finarty and designated player Taylor Bristol belting solo shots.

Junior center fielder Eden McNally (Castle Rock, Colo.) led UNK by going 2 for 3 with an RBI.

In game two, MWSU had a three-run second and then scored two in both the third and fourth innings to build a 7-1 lead. Dwyer had a two-run single in the second and another in the third with Finarty going deep in the fourth. Four different Griffs were in the circle led by starter Harley Pruetting (3-1). She allowed no earned runs over the first three innings.

The Lopers saw sophomore Madeline Janssen (Earlham, Ia.) have three shutout innings in a relief appearance with Wahoo shortstop Mary Chvatal (3 for 4) and McNally (2 for 4) combining for five of UNK's eight hits.

The Blue & Gold returns to non-con action this week as they host Mary (Mar. 13-14) and then heads to Joplin, Mo., to face Concordia-St. Paul and St. Cloud State.
