Men Upset #47 Hornets in Home Finale; Women's Win Streak at Six

Kearney, Neb. – The Nebraska Kearney men upset 47th-ranked Emporia State, 4-3, and the women blanked the Hornets, 7-0, Friday afternoon at Harmon Park.

This was the home finale for the men (11-6, 3-1) with the 22nd-ranked women (11-3, 2-0) returning to Harmon on April 13 to face Missouri Western.

After slipping past Newman, 4-3, on Thursday, the young men's team did it again today thanks to sweeping doubles and winning between three-five singles. Freshman Maksym Kulish (Ukraine) and graduate transfer Adam Palecek (Czechia) won 7-6 (7-5) at two doubles to secure the sweep. That close win set the tone as UNK won 7-6 in three different singles matches.

Kulish got UNK its second point with a 6-3, 7-4 (-4) decision at three with graduate Aaron Osmond (U.K.) winning a few minutes later at five; 7-6 (-1), 7-5. Finally, freshman lefty Jakub Strzelecki (Poland) clinched the dual with a 7-6 (-5), 3-6, 6-0 win at four. That made it 4-2 on the scoreboard with the Hornets (8-5, 1-1) winning in three sets at six to finish the long day.

UNK pushed its win streak to six and beat an E-State squad (3-6, 0-1) that recently easily defeated Division I members Lafayette (Pa.) and Providence (R.I.). The Lopers took all three doubles matches, allowing just five combined points at one and two.

In singles, UNK won each match in straight sets. Freshman Tanyaradzwa "Tanya" Midzi (Zimbabwe) worked the hardest, having a 7-5, 7-5 battle at four with freshman Fabiana Gamboa (Venezuela) recording a 6-2, 7-5 decision in the top spot.

The women head to Central Oklahoma and Northeastern State next weekend with the men at Creighton (April 7).
