Saturday Sweep at Patriot

Kearney, Neb. – True freshmen Daniella Morillas and Lauryn Haggadone tossed complete games and the offense erupted for 14 hits in the nightcap as Nebraska-Kearney swept Lincoln, 4-1 and 10-2 (5 innings) Saturday at Patriot Park.

UNK (18-24, 5-13) went 3-1 this weekend to move into 11th place in the standings. The race for the 10-team MIAA Tournament saw Fort Hays State (6-12) sweep Central Missouri on Saturday to stay in front of the Lopers.

In game one, Morillas (Newcastle, Calif.) threw a complete game three-hitter that featured just 96 pitches and no walks. She fanned six and shut out the Blue Tigers (11-27, 3-19) over the first five innings. She is now 9-10 with team-highs in wins, complete games (five), K's (84) and innings (104.2).

"Daniella continues to grid it out for us. She's earned her role in the circle, and in back-to-back days the defense has played well behind her," said UNK head coach Katie Ackermann. "We can't afford to people on for free, so we did a good job of execute plays and throwing strikes." Madi Rosenthal

At the plate, UNK scored in three innings with Colorado juniors Eden McNally and Rylyn Nelson going a combined 4 for 8 with two runs and an RBI. They bat three-four in the lineup with Lincoln junior first baseman Leah Jurgens having an opposite field, two-run double to left in the fourth.

The Lopers had a three-run second and a five-run fourth to blow away Lincoln in the nightcap. The onslaught featured five doubles, a triple from senior right fielder Carly Dembowski (Lincoln North Star) and a three-run dinger to dead center by Nelson. That marks her team-leading sixth dinger of the spring and she finished 2 for 3 with two runs and five RBI's.

"Our bats came alive, and it feels good to get our first run-rule in a while. Everyone fed information to each other, and we took it one pitch at a time. The more info we got, the better we saw things," said Ackermann. "Honestly, some people just needed to keep it simple today."

Additionally, sophomore shortstop and leadoff hitter Mary Chvatal went 3 for 3 with two runs and an RBI with Dembowski one of four Lopers to have a two-hit game. In the circle, Haggadone (York) threw 66 pitches and allowed two earned on five singles and a walk. She also fanned two and coaxed LU to hit into two double plays.

"That's Lauryn's first CG and she should be proud of herself. The biggest thing for her is limiting walks and she had only one," said Ackermann. "I hope she got some confidence because we'll need her down the stretch."

UNK hosts Newman (16-28, 4-14) next Friday afternoon. Nationally-ranked Central Oklahoma (37-7, 17-1) then visits Saturday for the home finale.

"We are such a momentum team, one that feeds off good energy," said Ackermann. "It'll be exciting to get back to work next week because we know what's in front of us."
