Kearney, Neb. – The 30th-ranked Nebraska-Kearney women's tennis team won the final four singles matches to rally past 33rd-ranked Missouri Western State, 4-3, Saturday afternoon at Harmon Park.

This was "Senor Day" with UNK honoring program stalwarts Melisa Becerra (Colombia) and Jazmin Zamorano (Mexico). Both have been Lopers the past four years, and both have well over 100 career wins. Team Talk

The Griffons (13-4, 3-1) almost spoiled the festivities as they took the doubles point thanks to wins at one and three. The 44th-ranked pair of Becerra and junior Narindra Ranaivo (Madagascar) did push their win streak to 10 in a row with a 6-1 decision at two. They are now an impressive 16-1 overall.

MWSU then won in straight sets at four and five singles to seemingly be in good shape to beat UNK for a fifth straight season. However, junior Alexis Bernthal (Boulder, Colo.) started the comeback with a straight set decision at six with Ranaivo doing the same at three. She rallied from a 6-5 hole in set one to win 7-6 (-4).

Becerra then got past fellow senior Izzi MacGibbon (4-6, 6-3, 6-2) at two to tie things up on the scoreboard. Freshman and 37th-ranked Fabiana Gamboa (Venezuela) then rallied past 49th-ranked Anya Chavez at one (7-5, 3-6, 6-0) to close things out. Gamboa just returned to the States after representing her county in an international event.

After visiting Fort Hays State on April 17, the Lopers face four teams currently ranked; No. 12 Southern Arkansas, No. 14 Washburn, No. 19 Northwest Missouri and No. 39 Southeastern Oklahoma.
