4/19/2024 10:27:00 PM

Kearney, Neb. – Sophomore southpaw Rylan Basart broke the javelin school-record for the third time this spring and senior Slayten Braun turned in the second fastest time 100-meter time in school history Friday night at the Loper Invitational at Kearney High School.

This was UNK's second of three home outdoor meets this year. Also in attendance were student-athletes from Chadron State, Wayne State, Fort Hays State, Nebraska Wesleyan, Colorado Christian, Colorado College, South Dakota Mines and Dodge (Kan.) City C.C.
 Brock Bass
Basart (Stockton, Kan.) broke a 32-year-old school mark (212-0) back on March 30 at KHS with a toss of 212-9. The old record was held by Darren Grauerholz, his uncle. Last week at Emporia State, Basart had a top toss of 213-5 while five of six efforts today traveled at least 60.84 meters. The new record came on his final attempt and ranks him second in the MIAA and fifth nationally.

Also in this event, Kansas freshman Wyatt Hammond was runner up (204-11) with Kansas senior Evan Prohaska third (207-6). Not surprisingly, UNK is ranked as the top men's jav squad in D2.

On the track, Braun (Norton, Kan.) continues a solid spring by running an 11.95 to win at 100 meters. That moves up two spots on UNK's all-time list and not too far off the 36-year-old-record held by Hall of Famer Carrie Hoehner Goltl (11.90).

Overall, UNK won 12 events and was runner up 14 times. Alliance senior Brock Brass was runner up in both the 100 (career-best 10.67) and 200 (21.56) with Wallace senior Micah Swedberg second in the 400 (48.77) and Ravenna senior Jack Drahota first in the 400-hurdles (54.63).

Per usual, Kearney senior Brayden Sorensen won the high jump (6-11.75) with Hastings freshman Nolan Studley fourth (6-8.75). Finally for the men, Giltner graduate Alex Goracke won the hammer (195-4), Gretna sophomore Clayton Kelly was first in the long jump (23-0) and Kearney junior Colby Spangler led the field in the triple jump (46-7.50).

On the women's side, Kearney sophomore Lily Novacek had a season-best throw to win the hammer invite (183-5) with Stamford sophomore Brianna Russell winning the high jump again (5-6) and Holdrege junior Samantha Schemper having a career-best 11-11.75 to be second in the vault. That height moves her up to sixth on the all-time list. Finally, Overton sophomore Maeli Meier won the 400-hurdles (1:04.75) with Aurora senior Kyla Carlson second (1:05.17).

UNK heads to the Drake Relays, Nebraska Wesleyan and Fort Hays State Invite next weekend.
