Match Recap: Men's Tennis |

Short Fall Dual Season Complete; ITA's on Deck

Kearney, Neb. – The Nebraska-Kearney tennis teams finished up a weekend trip to Colorado by going 2-2 on Friday.

The women (3-0) swept both Colorado Mesa and Colorado State-Pueblo, 7-0, with the men (1-2) falling to CMU, 5-2 and dropping a heartbreaker to Lubbock (Texas) Christian, 4-3. These were the finals duals of the fall.

Against the Mavericks, the women allowed just one combined point in two doubles matches but seniors Alexis Bernthal (Boulder, Colo.) and Masha Hatouka (Belarus) had to work hard to win at two and give the Lopers the sweep; 7-6 (7). In singles, the Lopers won four matches in straight sets with Hatouka at five and senior Narindra Ranaivo (Madagascar) at two both winning third-set tiebreakers by identical 10-5 scores.

Things were very easy against a developing Pueblo squad. UNK allowed only five combined points in doubles and won three singles matches by 6-0, 6-0 counts. That included efforts by redshirt junior Clare Plachy (Lincoln) and sophomore Julia Wartecka (Poland).

The men weren't as fortunate as they went a combined 2-5 in third-set tiebreakers against the Mavs and Chapparals. Mesa erased a 1-0 deficit by winning 10-6 at one and four singles and 12-10 at two. LCU managed a dual win after picking up third-set wins at five, 10-4, and six, 18-16.

In the Mesa dual, sophomore Jip Mens (Netherlands) had a hard-fought win at three singles; 7-6 (7), 3-6, 1-0 (8) with sophomore Andy Brisdon (U.K.) and freshman Adrian Constantin (Romania) doing the same at two doubles; 7-6 (4). Brisdon and Constantin won again against LCU as did Mens (6-2, 6-1) and sophomore Tom van den Dungen (Netherlands) at two singles; 6-4, 7-6 (2).

The men head to ITA Regionals Sept. 27-28 in Topeka with the women's ITA's set for Edmond on Sept. 20-22.
